Turn Awareness into Action: Start with Self-Care

April 29, 2025

Each May, Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us how important mental well-being is. This year, instead of letting the moment pass with a few posters or a webinar, let’s talk about something that makes a real difference: turning awareness into action. And that action starts with something simple but powerful – self-care.

What Is Self-Care?

Self-care isn’t about bubble baths or spa days (though we’re not knocking those!). It’s about making intentional choices every day to support your mental, emotional, and physical health. It’s small habits that create big shifts – checking in with yourself, setting boundaries, getting enough sleep, or reaching out when you need support.

In short, self-care is how you show up for yourself, so you can show up for everything else.

Why Self-Care Matters

Life is full of stressors. Deadlines, obligations, expectations – it adds up. Without regular self-care, stress can take a toll on your focus, energy levels, relationships, work, etc.

When you prioritize your well-being, you’re not only protecting your mental health – you’re also more energized, present, and grounded. You make better decisions. You communicate more clearly. You lead your life with more empathy.

It’s not selfish. It’s smart.

5 Simple Ways to Practice Self-Care (That Actually Fit into Your Day)

Take Real Breaks. Step away from your desk for lunch. Go for a 10-minute walk outside. Stretch. Even a short break can reset your brain and reduce tension.

Set Boundaries with Your Time. If you’re constantly checking email after work or watching the news past 10 PM, it might be time to reset your expectations with yourself and with others.

Say “No” When You Need To. Overcommitting is a fast track to burnout. Protect your capacity so you can say “yes” to what really matters.

Check in with Yourself. How are you feeling today? What do you need? This small act of self-awareness helps prevent burnout before it starts.

Use the Support That’s Available to You.
Self-care doesn’t mean doing everything alone. Sometimes the most powerful form of self-care is asking for help. That includes from your Employee Assistance Program. Counseling, stress management, and other wellness tools are available to help you navigate whatever you’re facing.

Let this month be more than a reminder – let it be a turning point.

Turn awareness into action.

And start with self-care.
