Celebrating Social Wellness Month – Building Stronger Connections

June 26, 2025

July is Social Wellness Month, a time to recognize the vital role that our relationships play in supporting our mental, emotional, and even physical health. In today’s fast-paced, digitally connected (but often socially disconnected) world, cultivating strong, supportive relationships is more important than ever.

Whether it’s through friendships, family ties, community involvement, or workplace camaraderie, our social connections form the foundation of resilience, reduce stress, and help us feel a sense of belonging.

What Is Social Wellness?

Social wellness refers to the quality of the relationships you have and how you interact with others. It involves:

  • Building healthy, nurturing, and supportive relationships
  • Communicating effectively and honestly
  • Setting and respecting boundaries
  • Managing conflict constructively
  • Being part of a positive social network

When your social wellness is strong, you’re better equipped to handle stress, solve problems, and maintain emotional balance.

Why Social Wellness Matters at Work

At work, social wellness affects everything from team collaboration to job satisfaction. A connected workplace culture fosters trust, engagement, and psychological safety –creating a healthier, more productive environment for everyone.

Employees who feel socially connected are:

  • Less likely to experience burnout
  • More likely to stay engaged and motivated
  • Better at managing work-related stress
  • More likely to reach out for help when they need it

Tips to Improve Your Social Wellness

Improving your social wellness doesn’t require a dramatic change – just small, intentional steps. Here are a few ways to get started:

Make Time for Connection:
Whether it’s catching up with a friend over lunch, joining a workplace social group, or checking in with a colleague, make space in your schedule for connection.

Practice Active Listening:
Be fully present in conversations. Listen to understand, not just to reply. Empathy builds trust.

Set Healthy Boundaries: Good relationships rely on mutual respect. Know your limits and respect others’. Boundaries help protect your time, energy, and mental health.

Be Open to New Relationships: Step out of your comfort zone – introduce yourself to someone new, join a group, or say yes to a coffee chat or social event.

Ask for Help When You Need It: Strong social wellness includes knowing when to reach out. Whether it’s a personal issue or work stress, don’t hesitate to talk to a trusted friend, manager, or use your EAP resources.

Social wellness isn’t just about having more people around – it’s about building meaningful, supportive relationships that help you thrive. This July, take a moment to reflect on your social connections. Who lifts you up? Who do you support? How can you strengthen those bonds at work and at home?
